The Holy Spirit is the most accessible person of the Godhead. He is omnipresent — everywhere at the same time, concurrently filling all of creation. Yet despite His omnipresence, there are billions of people who cannot hear Him, feel Him, or experience Him in any meaningful way.
This is not because He is distant or unavailable. It is because they have never truly sought Him. Cast your mind back to the very beginning. Before God spoke light into existence, before the earth took shape — the Holy Spirit was already there, hovering over the surface of the waters in the midst of the darkness (Genesis 1:2). He is over the land, over the oceans, and throughout the heavens. He is everywhere, actively executing the commands of the Lord at all times.
David grasped this truth and expressed it with wonder:
“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.”
— Psalm 139:7-10
God sees us every day. He knew us even when we were being formed in our mothers’ wombs. He was here before we arrived, He watched over us as we came into the world, and He will remain long after we are gone. It is a tragedy, then, that the One who was present at the very beginning of the world — the One who knows all things — is available to us as a divine guide and helper, yet so many ignore Him entirely. It is like purchasing a complex and powerful machine, struggling to operate it, and yet stubbornly refusing to open the manual that came with it. The Holy Spirit is that manual. He knows how life works because He was there when life was made.
THIRST FOR HIM
“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”
— Psalm 42:1-2
The first requirement for being filled with the Holy Spirit is a genuine, burning thirst for Him. The psalmist describes his longing for God using the image of a deer desperately panting for water. When a deer is thirsty, it does not sit still and wait — it runs every length of terrain, covering whatever distance is necessary, until it finds water. That is the quality of thirst we must cultivate for God.
To be filled with God’s Spirit, there must be a sincere hunger and desire for Him — not a casual curiosity, but a desperate longing. You must desire Him the way a man stranded in a desert craves water:
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
— Psalm 63:1
That kind of thirst does not go unsatisfied. God fills those who are genuinely hungry.
HOW DO WE SEEK HIM?
1. He Must Be Your First Pursuit
“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.”
— Mark 1:35
Even Jesus — the Son of God — rose early while it was still dark to seek the Father in prayer. If the Son of God prioritised seeking God above the demands of a busy day, how much more should we? You must seek the Lord early, diligently, and with genuine passion.
In our world today, many people wake up and immediately rush out chasing money, opportunities, and ambitions — without sparing even a moment for God. Yet the Holy Spirit was given to be our Helper, our Comforter, and our Guide. When we forget this great Helper and rely entirely on our own strength and abilities, it is no wonder so many end up wearied, depressed, and exhausted. We were never designed to carry the weight of life alone. Put God first — first in the morning, first in your plans, and first in your affections.
2. Be Persistent in Seeking God
“I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness.”
— Proverbs 8:17-18
Seeking God requires persistent, sustained effort. Too many people abandon their pursuit far too early. Sometimes God tests our persistence precisely to reveal how much we truly love and desire Him. Think about how people pursue access to earthly kings and powerful figures — they endure long waits, navigate strict protocols, and face repeated obstacles, yet they do not give up because the reward is worth it. How much more should we press on in our pursuit of the King of kings?
Your persistence in seeking God is a measure of the depth of your love for Him. When you seek Him with the same passion and determination that you bring to the pursuit of wealth, success, or status, you will surely find Him.
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”
— Jeremiah 29:13
Seeking God is not something to be done sluggishly or casually. It is not a trial-and-error exercise. It must be done with the whole heart — fully, intentionally, and without reservation. There are countless distractions in our world today, and many Christians are so consumed by them that they forget there is a heavenly Father who desires their attention and fellowship. Do not let the noise of this world crowd out the voice of the Spirit.
May you be seized with a strong and unquenchable desire for God’s Spirit. And as you seek Him with all your heart, may you find Him — and be filled. Amen.
