There are many believers who are still tormented and bullied by the enemy, the devil. It is not because these Christians lack power — it is because they lack the knowledge needed to exercise the power that has already been freely given to them. A soldier who does not know he is carrying a loaded weapon will run from an enemy he could have defeated in a single shot. Many Christians live defeated lives not because Heaven withheld power from them, but because no one ever taught them how to use what they already possess.
To understand the power you carry as a believer, you must first understand who Jesus is and the basic spiritual principles that govern His Kingdom. Consider an illustration: Prince William does not need to go searching for royal power or petition anyone to grant it to him — he was born into it. His only responsibility is to recognise it and exercise it according to his position. In the same way, every believer is born into a kingdom of power through the new birth in Christ. The power is not earned; it is inherited. Your responsibility is not to search for it, but to recognize it and walk in it.
THE ANOINTING OF JESUS
In Acts 10:38, Peter tells the household of Cornelius that God anointed Jesus Christ of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and that He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil. This anointing was not symbolic — it was the literal empowering presence of God upon a man, equipping Him to dismantle the works of darkness everywhere He went.
Jesus Himself was explicit about this anointing. In Luke 4:18, He stood up in the synagogue and openly declared that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him, and that this anointing mandated Him to:
1. Proclaim the gospel to the poor
2. Bring freedom to the captive
3. Restore sight to the blind
4. Set the oppressed free
This was not a vague spiritual aspiration — it was a clear, four-fold mission statement. Everywhere Jesus went, these four things followed Him. And remarkably, this same Spirit who empowered Jesus now lives in every believer who has received Christ.
Jesus’ anointing began at conception, not at His baptism.
a) From Birth — Luke 1:31-35. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit through the power of the Most High. The baby in Mary’s womb was formed by the very Spirit of God. He was anointed before He ever took His first breath. His assignment on earth was not something He discovered along the way — it was predetermined by God before the foundation of the world.
b) Confirmed at Baptism — Matthew 3:16-17. The Spirit of the Lord descended upon Jesus like a dove, and the Father’s voice thundered from heaven, declaring, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” What was true from conception was now publicly confirmed and activated for ministry. This is a pattern many believers miss: the anointing was already there from the new birth, but there are still moments when God publicly confirms and releases it for greater service.
JESUS HAD POWER OVER EVERY POWER
In Luke 1:35, the angel declared that Jesus would be called the Holy One, the Son of God. Remarkably, this was not hidden knowledge — even demons understood it. That is why evil spirits knew His name, recognised where He came from, and trembled violently in His presence.
a) Demons identified Him as the Holy One of God (Mark 1:24, Luke 4:34). They did not need an introduction. The moment Jesus walked into a room, the demonic realm recognised spiritual authority and responded with fear.
b) An entire legion of demons begged Him for mercy (Mark 5:8-13). A man possessed by thousands of evil spirits could not stand before Jesus without those spirits pleading for permission to leave rather than be cast into torment.
c) He healed every kind of sickness and disease (Luke 4:40). No ailment was too advanced, no condition too far gone, when it came into contact with the anointing of God upon Christ.
If demons trembled before Jesus, and if that same Spirit now lives in you, then the forces of darkness assigned against your life have no legal ground to torment you. The problem is not their power — it is your awareness of the authority you carry.
THE BELIEVER’S PLACE
1. We become sons, not slaves, the moment we believe (John 1:12).
As believers, we possess the full rights of sons, not merely the limited privileges of visitors. Consider this: when I travel to the United States as a visitor, I may enjoy certain privileges — I can walk the streets, visit attractions, even open a temporary bank account — but I do not have the full rights of an American citizen. I cannot vote. I cannot run for office. I have no permanent claim on the land. Citizenship grants something a visa never can.
In the same way, when we believe in Jesus Christ, we are not given temporary privileges in God’s kingdom — we are adopted as sons and daughters with full inheritance rights. Sons carry the same Spirit as Christ Jesus Himself (Romans 8:14-17). This means the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead, who healed the sick, who cast out demons, and who walked in fearless authority now resides in you — not as a houseguest, but as the seal of your sonship.
2. As believers, we have great power over demons and principalities because Jesus has already completed the work on our behalf.
He descended into the depths, conquered death, and stripped hell of its authority over us (Colossians 2:15). The victory is not something we are still fighting for — it is something we are now enforcing. The only responsibility we carry is to believe. Jesus said in John 14:12 that whoever believes in Him will do the works that He did — and even greater works — because He was going to the Father and sending His Spirit to empower us for exactly this purpose.
This is staggering when you consider it. Jesus did not say a select few super-spiritual believers would do greater works. He said whoever believes.That includes you.
Ephesians 2:6 tells us that God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly places. This is not a future hope reserved for eternity — it is a present spiritual reality. It means we already have access to dwell, move, and operate in the very anointing that rested upon Jesus. We are not waiting for power to be given to us in the future; we are positioned right now to walk in it.
So why do so many believers live defeated, oppressed, and bullied by the enemy? Hosea 4:6 gives the answer: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” It is not a shortage of power that destroys believers — it is a shortage of revelation. The devil cannot give you anything he has not already lost to Christ, and he cannot take from you anything that Christ has not already secured. Your authority is not something you must fight to obtain. It is something you must rise up and exercise.
Decree
I am a son, not a slave.
I carry the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead.
I am seated with Christ in heavenly places, far above every power of darkness.
I walk today in the fullness of the authority that has been freely given to me, in Jesus’ name.
